Book one of the Five Crowns of Okriths
Summary
Thirteen years fleeing witch hunters and the looming threat of death. Nineteen-year-old Remy knows she is possibly the last red witch alive, and she is determined to stay that way. The Northern Court King has slaughtered her home court and placed a bounty on red witch heads.
When four fae warriors enter her tavern refuge, Remy tries to flee, but her magic isn’t strong enough to stop a fae prince on a mission. The handsome Prince Hale of the Eastern Kingdom wants to stop a war with the Northern Court before his kingdom befalls the same fate as Remy’s. He needs a red witch and Remy may be the only person alive who can help him. Can she really trust Prince Hale? Can her fallen court be resurrected from the evil clutches of the Northern Court King? For the chance to save herself, her people, and help defeat the Northern King, Remy must put her faith in Hale and his companions on a dangerous quest to find lost relics.
Personnel Thoughts
I absolutely loved this book. I got it in an Audiobook and love the voice of the narrator.
I was recommended this book by my friends on TikTok and I was worried! They had described it as " It's similar to ACOTAR." Which they didn't know they made me not want to read the book. I read ACOTAR and didn't want to read a book that was similar. And I didn't pick up this book up for along time due to that comment. And now I am regretting it.
Sarah J Maas doesn't have the rights to Fae, Seasonal/Directional courts, or fated mates. But any book that has these automatically gets compared to Maas books. Due to this comparison I have pulled away from books that are described like a Maas book. I have been missing out on so many books these included.
I would not compare these books to a Maas book. These books are diverse, they have LGBTQ, plus size, bipoc and interracial couples. This book has witches of different powers and Fae of different courts. Love and action, a morally grey male lead, an actually strong female lead and found family. The writing draws you in and keeps your attention. The pacing isn't rushed or too slow. I was in a constant state of anxiety, afraid I was falling for the male lead to be hurt. I was wondering when my heart was going to be ripped out by the male lead. Unfortunately, A.K. Mulford ripped out my heart in other ways. And honestly I welcomed it. I loved the book, they are just so good.
The found family is amazingly written. The side characters aren't just side characters. From Heather to Bri, I loved the group of people you meet in this book. I want to know more about these characters. I need to hear more banter and feel like I am there with them, feeling like apart of there family.
If you know anything about me, I love a book or I don't finish it. After finishing this one I took no time to get the second one, A Witches' Blade and I cant wait for the third. A.K Mulford says she wants to be like the Spice Girls. She hopes that everyone will have a favorite book like they have a favorite Spice Girl. Waiting for the series to be finished I haven't picked one yet, but this one is definitely in the lead to be my favorite...... until maybe Neelo's book.
