Lady of the drowned empire, the fourth installment of the Drowned Empire series
The author describes this book series as a throne of glass mixed with Roman and Egyptian themes.
Blindsided by their aunts, betrayal, and stripped of their protections of their station, Lyr and her sisters, only hope of survival is to throw themselves until the dark intrigue of the Bamarian Court. As Meer and Morgana struggle to hide their illegal magic while living amongst their enemies, Lyr uncovers long-buried secrets from her mother that may finally unlock her power. But the emperor rotors are determined to set decades long plans into motion, with layers, true identity, placing her at the center of the game. As Morgana's magic intensifies too, it's breaking point she comes face-to-face with the Lumerian empire's, most insidious secret, one that threatens her and Meera's lives. To save her sisters, Lyr must escape Bamaria with Rhyan. Though they are being hunted by demons and tracked across borders by the empires forces, they are determined to solve the puzzle Lyr's mother left behind. But claiming her power may not be enough as an ancient evil returns to Belmaria.
My thoughts: Jaw Dropping
Frankie really has done it again! With the Daughter of the Drowned Empire being her debut novel and it being a series her writing keeps gettting better. And it was amazing to begin with.
This book had me on the edge of my seat! It was jaw dropping. Frankie's writing already completely immerses me in her story anyway, but this story had me forgetting I wasn't Lyr. When the characters from anxious, I was anxious when they were mad, I was mad you feel everything the character feels and rp they're going through everything they are.
The pacing of the story continues similarly to the first books. It fits perfectly with the way the story is headed.
The adventure and conflicts in this book makes sense for each character and is relatable. You understand each point of view and why the characters are doing what they are doing.
We get more Lyr and Rhyan time on the page. And Do We Get More Lyr And Rhyan Time!! This book is the spice the slow burn has been teasing us with! And it was worth the wait.
What I was surprised by.
Frankie always seems to surprise me in her books but this book was duel POV. We not only got Lyr's point of view but we also got to see things from Morgana's point of view. An amazing addition to this story. With this we get to see what's happening with all the sisters together and separated. Which drags you into the mystery of the evil taking over the Bamarian Court.
There is also LGBTQIA+ represtation, as you find out one of the characters is bisexual. And you get spicy scenes with the character and a male and female partner. This story isn't a why choose so these scenes are separated. But very well written and oh so good to read.
The Final Score
I absolutely love this series. I love Frankie's writing style and the amazing story tell ablility she has.
I give this book 5 of my black hearts. And as far as spicy goes, 3 chili peppers for that fact we get smut and for a slow burn we got a good amount of it.
