"Freer than a seraphim. Stronger than a gryphon."
Guardian of the Drowned Empire was given to me as an ARC copy. And let me tell you I am so happy I was able to experience this before release. The Sequel to The Daughter of the Drowned Empire is absolutely amazing.
You get to see Lyr finally take her training seriously, and that fact causes our very fine Rhyan to get real close and intimate with her. This slow burn is perfect. The reader gets to feel more tension with the characters as they develop and adapt to the change of a very unstable political system while still trying to survive the trail they must complete.
I thought the bad guys were annoying in the first book, but oh man they reach a whole other level of irritating. I was literally screaming at the book and even had to go to the gym to get some of the frustration and irritation out. (Which we love books that make us feel. I just wasn't ready for how into this b0ok I was going to get.)
During Lyr and Rhyan's training, he gives her great advice that everyone should hear.
"Don't compare yourself to others, compare yourself to where you started."
And "your strength comes from hard work." Rhyan showed Lyr that she didn't need magic to make her strong, she always had it. After his speeches I was ready to fight an akadim myself. But he didn't coddle her. I appreciate an instructor that is true but motivating. Rhyan would tell her she was bad, the worst one on the track. Which led to banter no matter how true it was.
The Guardian of the Drowned Empire gives us a love story with a slow burn and a bodyguard trope, the forbidden love. And the spice has entered this book!!!! Lets just say, Rhyan knows just what to say to get to a girl.
He grinned, pulling me closer, his arms like a metal cage around me, his lips against my ear. "Show you the real meaning of stamina, not speed."
OH yeah that the line I needed to read.
This book was so entertaining. The mystery, the suspense, the action, the love, everything will be dragging you in the world Frankie has created. There are plenty of times you will be embarrassed for the characters, wanna fight with them, cheer them on and just scream at the book.
And Frankie leaves this book as only she could, on a cliff hanger that will leave you wanting more.
With more to come I can't wait to see where this journey is going for Lyr, Rhyan and Bamaria as a whole.
PS if you still like Tristen I still think you are wrong and I say he is horrible.
Of course I rate this book 5 Black hearts with 1 spice rating.
