Daughter of the Drowned Empire by Frankie Diane Mallis has been the ride of a lifetime.
This is the most realistic Princess to Warrior story I have ever read. Lyr starts off as your basic spoiled princess with title, entitlement, and class. But she is still kind and you cant help but liking her. When her world changes it’s in a major way, watching her cousin being taken and knowing she was put to death. Her sisters manifesting the same forbidden magic turns Lyr from princess in both public and private to princess forced in public and cinderella in private. And when her power does not manifest at all, she is forced to become a warrior.
Which she doesn't do well at first. Not only is she powerless, she doesn't have any idea how to fight or be a warrior. She was raised as a scholar, a book worm now forced into battle. So the transition is as hard as I would expect and I love how Frankie Diane Mallis captured that change perfectly. There are moments you are cheering for Lyr and moments you are screaming at her because she didn't do something.
The growth of Lyr is not the only thing that keeps your inthralled in the story but the men do as well. Tristen, Lyr's pretty boy prince, and Rhyan, Lyr's morally grey warrior, are always at each others others throat. But they both care for Lyr and try to help her in their own way. Whether you are rooting for Tristen ( your wrong) or madly in love with Rhyan the men in this book know how to capture their audience. Even though Rhyan knows just what to say and what to do. Can I just say I love men written by women.
This book is a great damsel in distress turned damsel fighting for what she loves and believes in. But WARNING IT ENDS IN A CLIFF HANGER!!!! I rate this book five black hearts. My highest rating so far.
